College of Chemistry & Materials Engineering
The College of Chemistry & Materials Engineering is one of the earliest departments/colleges of Wenzhou University. Its predecessor, the Chemistry Department of Wenzhou Normal College, was founded in 1958. There are 2 national first-class undergraduate programs in Chemistry (teacher training), Materials Science and Engineering, one provincial first-class undergraduate program in Applied Chemistry, and the program in Energy Chemistry which is the first in the province. In terms of advanced study, there are one doctoral program in Chemistry (first-level discipline), two academic-pathway postgraduate programs in Chemistry, and Materials Science and Engineering, and three professional-pathway postgraduate programs in Subject Teaching (chemistry), Resources and Environment (environmental new materials), and Materials and Chemical Engineering. Currently, there are 970 full-time undergraduate students and 335 postgraduate students, including 16 overseas students and 23 postdoctoral fellows. 7 doctoral candidates were enrolled in 2022. The College covers an area of 36,000 square meters, with the total instruments and equipment valuing more than 210 million yuan.
Excellent discipline development. The discipline of chemistry was rated as the key discipline in the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan” and the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” of Zhejiang Province, and the first-class discipline (category A) in the “Thirteenth Five-Year Plan.” Currently, it is among the top 1% of the global ESI ranking and remains in the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects by ShanghaiRanking. It ranks 64th in terms of Natural Index and 45th by Times Higher Education (B+) in the country. The discipline of materials science develops rapidly. Since 2019, it has remained in the top 1% of global ESI ranking for four consecutive years and entered the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects by ShanghaiRanking (301-400). It is rated A- by Times Higher Education, ranking 34th in the country.
Strong faculty team. There are 150 faculty members, including 41 with senior titles and 48 with deputy senior titles. 93% of full-time teachers hold doctoral degrees. The College has pooled various talents such as Changjiang Chair Professor, candidates for the National Talents Program, National Overseas (Youth) Distinguished Experts, recipients of special allowances from the State Council, Provincial Kunpeng Program Candidates, etc., and 3 ministerial and provincial-level innovation teams
Scientific research advantage. The College has established 7 national, provincial and ministerial-level platforms such as National Demonstration Base for Talent Introduction, China Light Industry Pen Material Key Laboratory, Provincial Carbon Material Technology Research Key Laboratory, and Provincial Leather Engineering Key Laboratory, and 3 local research institutes including New Materials and Industrial Technology Research Institute, and Carbon Neutral Technology Innovation Research Institute. The College has significant advantages in basic research in carbon energy materials and chemistry, and distinctive characteristics in applied research such as sodium-ion batteries, degradable materials and high-end inks, functional polymers, optoelectronic materials and devices, etc. In the past five years, the faculty undertook a total of 47 national-level research projects with the research funds exceeding 105 million yuan. They published more than 900 SCI-indexed papers, including 7 in sub-journals of Nature, 2 in J. Am. Chem. Soc., 12 in Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., 2 in Adv. Mater. (IF>10), etc. They possess more than 340 invention patents authorized by the nation, and have won several provincial science and technology awards, teaching achievement awards, etc.
Outstanding student training. Several graduates received the titles of National Distinguished Young Scholars, Changjiang Scholars Distinguished Professor, and National Hundreds of Thousands of Talents, etc. The postgraduate training system is complete with sufficient funds, and all the students can receive the scholarships. A new integrated mechanism for postgraduate-doctoral-postdoctoral study has been established, and a provincial post-doctoral workstation has been approved. More than 1,000 postgraduate students graduated, of which more than 200 were employed in universities and research institutes. One first-batch graduate student published a paper in Nature as the first author.
Active academic exchanges and cooperation. The College built two platforms, namely, Wiley-Wenzhou International Conference on Carbon Energy and Green Chemistry Forum under World Young Scientist Summit. It launched the journal Carbon Energy which was selected as a project of the Chinese Science and Technology Journal Action Plan. In June 2022, the first impact factor (21.556) was obtained. In July 2022, the College launched another journal Carbon Neutralization to further enhance its academic influence.
